My Review

Oh my goodness, what a beautifully written, moving and funny book!

Something Old, Something New is told from Annie’s perspective, a twice divorced nearly forty year old who is pretty fed up with how her life has ended up and a harassed, stressed-out secondary school teacher. Annie has 3 children, Janis who is 17 from her first marriage to Evan, and Henry and Anabelle, 8 and 6 from her second marriage to Dex.

Evan and Annie had too much, too young which ultimately drove them apart however they are still in contact whilst he is living his jetset lifestyle. Dex and Annie were never destined to work considering Dex is actually gay and is now about to marry the love of his life, Trevor. However, Dex and Annie are best friends and he is a wonderful father (and step-father) to the 3 children. Evan, Annie, Dex, Trevor and the children are a family unit – getting on tremendously well and really supportive of one another.

Whilst Evan has always been in Annie’s life given their amicable relationship since divorcing, he comes back into their lives with a bang and Annie begins to realise that his life has not been as exciting and happy as she once believed.

I loved all the characters, and I think that I love Evan a little bit myself!! Annie is a wonderful narrator, so honest about her feelings, fiercely protective over her children’s future, willing to recognise when she has made a mistake and put things right. I enjoyed seeing her funny side, such a dry sense of humour that brings her to life. The characters were so real, people that you can imagine having summer BBQs with.

There is a such a depth and raw emotion to Boleyn’s writing, at times I felt a little lump in my throat and most definitely got caught up in the emotion and humour of the book. My only disappointment was when I thought that I had 10% of the book to go and then realised that it was a chapter sampler! I feel a little bit sad to have left the Llewellyn extended family!

DarcieAbout the author:

Darcie Boleyn has a huge heart and is a real softy. She never fails to cry at books and movies, whether the ending is happy or not. Darcie is in possession of an overactive imagination that often keeps her awake at night. Her childhood dream was to become a Jedi but she hasn’t yet found suitable transport to take her to a galaxy far, far away. She also has reservations about how she’d look in a gold bikini, as she rather enjoys red wine, cheese and loves anything with ginger or cherries in it – especially chocolate.

Darcie fell in love in New York, got married in the snow, rescues uncoordinated greyhounds and can usually be found reading or typing away on her laptop.
