You need to know who your husband really was…thumbnail_AFTER HE DIED cover

When Paula Gadd’s husband of almost thirty years dies, just days away from the seventh anniversary of their son, Christopher’s death, her world falls apart. Grieving and bereft, she is stunned when a young woman approaches her at the funeral service, and slips something into her pocket. A note suggesting that Paula’s husband was not all that he seemed…

When the two women eventually meet, a series of revelations challenges everything Paula thought they knew, and it becomes immediately clear that both women’s lives are in very real danger.

Both a dark, twisty slice of domestic noir and taut, explosive psychological thriller, After He Died is also a chilling reminder that the people we trust the most can harbour the deadliest secrets…

After He Died was published by Orenda Books on the 30th July 2018. Many thanks to Orenda Books for my copy of the book for this review and inviting me onto this blog tour.

My Review

I am absolutely over the moon to be kicking off this epic Orenda Books blog tour for the awesome After He Died alongside the fabulous Jo at My Chestnut Reading Tree.

Firstly, how fabulous is that cover? The black wreath on a creamy grey background with pops of red…intriguing to say the least. Even more so when you read the blurb which is chilling but so possible – how well do we truly know those closest to us?

After He Died opens at the funeral of Paula’s husband, she is understandably distressed, distant and just wants to get the day over and done with. However, she receives a note from a mystery woman, Cara, which is about to cast doubt upon the last 30 years of marriage and makes Paula question those closest to her. At a time whereby she should be mourning the death of her husband, she finds herself asking whether she should have trusted Thomas as implicitly as she did. What ensues is Paula’s determination to get answers to the revelations that she discovers…however this also puts her in grave danger as someone wants to stop the truth from getting out.

After He Died is a fantastic read that is very difficult to put down…this is addictive reading at its best complimented by short, sharp chapters that I adore! I was desperate to find out the truth alongside Paula but also not wanting the brilliantly complex story to end.

Malone has crafted interesting and well-rounded characters who come alive off the page. Paula is a great main character; both her grief and anger come off the page. At a time when she should be grieving for her husband, their son who died a few years earlier and the future that they have lost, she is thrown into a completely different world by Cara. Her contrasting emotions are brilliantly conveyed. Cara is another strong character who just wants answers and for the truth to come out.

After He Died certainly keeps it’s reader on the edge of their seat throughout with its twists and turns. It certainly had me guessing throughout and I truly cannot get enough of this author’s writing. Another brilliant read from Michael J. Malone.
