Meet Amy Winter: Detective Inspector, Truth and Lies coverdaughter of a serial killer.

DI Amy Winter is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her highly respected police officer father. But when a letter arrives from the prison cell of Lillian Grimes, one half of a notorious husband-and-wife serial-killer team, it contains a revelation that will tear her life apart.

Responsible for a string of heinous killings decades ago, Lillian is pure evil. A psychopathic murderer. And Amy’s biological mother. Now, she is ready to reveal the location of three of her victims—but only if Amy plays along with her twisted game.

While her fellow detectives frantically search for a young girl taken from her mother’s doorstep, Amy must confront her own dark past. Haunted by blurred memories of a sister who sacrificed herself to save her, Amy faces a race against time to uncover the missing bodies.

But what if, from behind bars, Grimes has been pulling the strings even tighter than Amy thought? And can she overcome her demons to prevent another murder?

Truth and Lies was published on the 30th August 2018 by Thomas and Mercer. Many thanks to the author for my copy of the book via NetGalley for this review.

My Review

I am a massive fan of Caroline Mitchell’s books so I was very excited to hear about the arrival of DI Amy Winter and therefore a new series! Whilst Truth and Lies introduces its reader to a new protagonist and her team, it doesn’t rest on its laurels and ease the reader in gently…. hell no, the reader is thrown straight into an investigation into a missing young girl.

Early on in the book, Amy receives a letter that is in danger of changing her life forever and making Amy question herself, her morals and her motives. Amy’s biological mother is the notorious Lillian Grimes, a psychopathic serial killer who is in prison. This knowledge turns Amy’s world upside down so alongside the investigation into the missing girl, Amy is determined to give three families closure by finding out where Lillian and her husband laid their bodies.

As you can tell, this is an intricate and complex plot that the author handles brilliantly! The narrative is a combination of the present day as well as snippets from Amy’s past. Truth and Lies is, at times, a hard read as the author tackles difficult subjects head on. Lillian is one of the realistic and terrifying characters I have ever come across, and I read a lot of police procedural/crime/psychological thrillers…she is cold, calculating, manipulative with absolutely no empathy or remorse – a wonderful character for the reader 😊. Lillian’s character is authentic and there are parallels with infamous female serial killers in the UK. I felt that Lillian comes across as well as she does due to meticulous research on Mitchell’s behalf.

Truth and Lies is a fast-paced and gripping thriller that has its reader hooked from start to finish and THAT ending most definitely leaves you wanting more – roll on book two. Truth and Lies is an excellent start to what is looking to be a very promising series as I feel that the author has only scratched the surface with Amy and Lillian!

Highly recommended and I look forward to The Secret Child (expected early 2019).
