Alicia Berenson writes a diary as a release, an outlet – and to prove to her beloved husband that everything is fine. She can’t bear the thought of worrying Gabriel, or causing him pain.
Until, late one evening, Alicia shoots Gabriel five times and then never speaks another word.
Forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber is convinced he can successfully treat Alicia, where all others have failed. Obsessed with investigating her crime, his discoveries suggest Alicia’s silence goes far deeper than he first thought.
And if she speaks, would he want to hear the truth?
THE SILENT PATIENT is the gripping must-read debut thriller of 2019 – perfect for fans of THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW by A.J. Finn and THE GIRL BEFORE by JP Delaney.T
The Silent Patient was published on the 7th February 2019 by Orion. Many thanks to the publisher for my copy of the book for review.
Well what the heck do I say about this fabulous book to do it justice…not sure it’s possible!
So if you’re active on Twitter, you must have been living under a rock if you’ve not seen the hype building about The Silent Patient. I was extremely lucky to receive an early copy of this book last year and I must say, it took my breath away. An absolute page turner that I could not put down!
The combination of brilliant writing and a fascinating subject make this an amazing debut and most definitely a top read of 2019!
The Silent Patient is Alicia Berenson, successful painter who shot her husband when he arrived home from work and then doesn’t say another word. Even when facing an open and shut murder charge, she doesn’t speak to explain herself or defend her actions. As a result, Alicia is sent to a secure unit to do her time with various psychologists trying to unlock her and get her talking but to no avail.
Theo Faber is completely fascinated with the murder and Alicia’s subsequent silence so jumps at the chance of changing jobs (and some feel destroying his successful career as a promising criminal psychotherapist) to work within Alicia’s unit. Theo is adamant that he can get her talking and answer the questions that so many people have…himself included!
The Silent Patient is an extremely complex novel which has twists and turns everywhere….just brilliant! I do read a lot of psychological thrillers but some of the revelations in this book had me stunned!
This book hooked me right from the start and I couldn’t read it quick enough. I just needed to find out what had happened and why Alicia was no longer talking. The story is told from Theo’s perspective and we also ‘hear’ from Alicia through her journal that she wrote in up to Gabriel’s death which provides an insight into Alicia before the murder and really brings her to life from the pages.
An absolutely startling debut from Alex Michaelides which I highly recommend to psychological thriller and crime fans.
Born in Cyprus to a Greek-Cypriot father and English mother, Alex Michaelides studied English literature at Cambridge University and got his MA in screenwriting at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. He wrote the film The Devil You Know (2013) starring Rosamund Pike and co-wrote The Con is On (2018), starring Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, Parker Posey and Sofia Vergara.
The Silent Patient is his first novel.
