he night she moves in with Peter, she’s so happy, so exhilarated, so in love. Later, she will remember a much smaller feeling, a tiny one percent in her gut. And she will remember pushing that feeling aside…
Samantha Frayn doesn’t know why Peter Bridges picks her – a nobody with bitten fingernails and a troubled childhood behind her – but she falls quickly. He’s older, charming, likes fine wine and French films, and his beautiful home has real art on its walls.
Peter transforms Samantha’s life in an instant. He sees the better version of herself – the one she’s always wanted to be. It’s only normal that there’s a little friction, when she moves in, over domestic matters like where things are kept, or the proper times to eat, sleep and shower. She’s lucky to be with someone who can help her find a new job, move on from childish friends, and speak with greater sophistication.
But as Samantha notices, more and more, Peter’s temper, she starts to wonder if there might be consequences to breaking the rules of the world he has so quickly built around her.
And then she receives an anonymous note that makes her ask: is she the first woman to feel trapped by Peter? Is she being paranoid, manipulated, or could she be in danger?
You can tell the truth about your life, but someone needs to be listening. Someone needs to trust you. And someone needs to save you from the man you thought you loved.
The Women is published today, 22nd May 2019, by Bookouture. Many thanks to the publisher for my copy of the book via NetGalley and for inviting me onto this blog tour.
I have been a huge fan of S. E. Lynes’ writing from the start with Valentina so I was very excited to get started on The Women and I definitely was not disappointed!!
The Women starts with the honeymoon of Sam, Peter and their baby daughter, taking in the sights of Rome. We are then taken back to how they met and the start of their relationship. Sam falls completely and utterly head over heels with Peter, the attractive and mysterious older man whose attention is extremely flattering. As time passes, it is clear that Peter is very much a man set in his ways, to the point that Sam just accepts, and makes excuses for his controlling nature.
Not long after their daughter is born, Peter encourages Sam to start teaching at the local college, Sam is more interested in teaching English as a foreign language but comes around to Peter’s way of thinking. All is going well until she starts receiving poems that are clearly aimed at her relationship with Peter. As a result, Sam is suspicious of all of her students.
I absolutely loved this book, I was so frustrated on Sam’s behalf as I could see that Peter was manipulating her, disguised as romance, but Sam didn’t see it that way…which must happen so many times in real life. The author really brings to life how easy it is to get swept away in the moment…I’m guessing we’ve all been there to some degree!
The pacing of this book was brilliant, with the author teasing us with what was to come with the opening chapter and then taking us back to where it all began. I was engrossed in the story right from the start and wanted to know why Sam was receiving these horrible pieces of writing and who was sending them from her group of students who on the surface all seemed very pleasant and liked Sam’s class. I had my suspicions throughout the book and kept changing my mind 😊
Another fantastic story from S. E. Lynes – definitely a page turner and extremely difficult to put down! Highly recommended.
